Japanese Hamburger Steak (Hambagu) in NYC
Ichibantei serves Japanese hamburger steak, known as hambagu: a juicy beef-and-pork patty, served without a bun, in three styles. Find us at 100 3rd Ave in the East Village near Union Square, open until 3 AM.
Hambagu is a Japanese comfort-food classic, a home-style dinner you’d find in a Japanese diner or family kitchen. It’s cooked like a steak, served on a plate with rice and sides, and eaten with a knife and fork. Entrées start at $24.
Three kinds of hambagu
- Hamburger Steak: a beef-and-pork patty in rich demi-glacé sauce, with wedge fries and broccoli. The one most guests order.
- Cheese Hamburger Steak: the same patty and demi-glacé, topped with melted cheese.
- “Wafu” Hamburger Steak: wafu means Japanese-style. This lighter version comes with bean sprouts, shiso leaf, grated daikon radish and a savory onion sauce.
Ask for the sauce on the side if you’d like to control it. You can add an ontama (soft egg) on top.
How it’s served
Each hambagu comes with rice and miso soup, like a Japanese teishoku set meal (miso soup isn’t included with takeout or delivery). You can ask for half rice, extra rice or no rice. All three are on our $75 prix-fixe group menu too. See group dining.
